How to Use a Bong for Dabs: A Step-by-Step Guide
Dabbing has become incredibly popular for its potent effects and flavorful experience. While dedicated dab rigs are designed specifically for concentrates, you might be wondering if you can use the bong you already own. The good news is that with a simple adapter, you can easily convert your bong for dabbing.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about using a bong for dabs, from the necessary equipment to step-by-step instructions and pro tips.
- Cost-effective: No need to buy a separate rig if you already own a bong
- Versatile: One piece of equipment for both flower and concentrates
- Beginner-friendly: Great way to try dabbing without significant investment
- Flavor loss: More diffusion can mean less flavor preservation
- Less optimized: Not specifically designed for concentrates like dab rigs
- Bulkier: Typically larger than purpose-built dab rigs
Remove the bowl from your bong and replace it with your dab nail or banger. Make sure it fits securely in the downstem. Add enough water to your bong for filtration, but not so much that it splashes into your mouth when inhaling.
Using your butane torch, heat the quartz banger evenly. Focus on the bottom and sides until it becomes red hot. This usually takes 30-45 seconds depending on the thickness of the quartz and the strength of your torch.
For the best flavor experience, allow the nail to cool slightly before applying your concentrate. The ideal temperature range is between 315°F and 450°F (157°C - 232°C). A good rule of thumb is to wait 30-60 seconds after heating, depending on the thickness of your banger.
Using your dab tool, place a small amount of concentrate onto the heated nail while simultaneously beginning to inhale slowly. Rotate the dab tool to ensure all the concentrate comes off and vaporizes.
Place the carb cap over the nail to create an enclosed chamber. This lowers the pressure, allowing the concentrate to vaporize at a lower temperature and ensuring you capture all the vapor. Continue inhaling until you've collected all the vapor, then exhale.
Experiment with lower temperatures for better flavor. You'll get less thick clouds but more terpene preservation and a smoother hit.
After each dab, use a cotton swab to clean any residue from your banger while it's still warm. This "q-tip tech" will extend the life of your quartz and maintain flavor quality.
Concentrates are much more potent than flower. Begin with a dab about the size of a grain of rice, especially if you're new to dabbing.
Try placing your concentrate in the banger before heating it. Heat until it begins to vaporize, then cap and inhale. This method eliminates guesswork about temperature.
Converting your bong for dabbing is a simple process that opens up a new world of consumption methods. While it may not perfectly replace a dedicated dab rig, it's an excellent way to explore concentrates without investing in additional equipment.
Remember to always use caution when handling torches and hot surfaces, and start with small amounts to gauge your tolerance. Happy dabbing!
